Terms and Conditions

These Terms and Conditions govern your use of Schiphol APIs. By accessing or using any Schiphol API, you agree to comply with these terms and the General API Terms & Conditions. Please read them carefully before integrating with our services.

Important Notice

For specific APIs, additional Specific API Terms & Conditions may apply. In case of any conflict between the General API Terms & Conditions and Specific Terms, the Specific Terms shall prevail.

General Terms & Conditions

The following general terms apply to all Schiphol APIs unless explicitly stated otherwise in API-specific terms and conditions.

Acceptance of Terms

By accessing, registering for, or using any Schiphol API, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree with any part of these terms, you may not use our APIs.

Data Usage & Distribution

All data obtained through Schiphol APIs is provided for your use only and subject to the following restrictions:

  • You are not allowed to distribute, sell, or otherwise share data obtained through the APIs with other parties
  • Data must only be used for the purposes specified in your API agreement
  • You must implement appropriate security measures to protect API data
  • Any commercial use must be explicitly approved by Schiphol
Prohibited Use

It is strictly prohibited to use Schiphol APIs for competitive analysis, unauthorized commercial purposes, or any use that conflicts with the intended purpose of the API. Violation of these terms may result in immediate termination of API access.

Authentication & Security

  • API keys and credentials are personal and non-transferable
  • You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your API credentials
  • Never expose API keys in client-side code or public repositories
  • Rotate API keys regularly (at least every 90 days)
  • Report any security breaches or unauthorized access immediately

Rate Limits & Fair Usage

All APIs implement rate limiting to ensure system stability and fair usage. Exceeding rate limits may result in temporary or permanent suspension of API access. Respect these limits and implement appropriate caching strategies.

Service Availability

While we strive to maintain high availability, Schiphol does not guarantee uninterrupted API service. We reserve the right to:

  • Perform scheduled maintenance with advance notice
  • Suspend service for security or operational reasons
  • Modify or discontinue APIs with reasonable notice
  • Implement changes to improve service quality

Access Tiers & Specific Terms

Schiphol APIs are available in different access tiers, each with specific terms and conditions that apply in addition to the General Terms. The tier assigned to an API determines its intended audience, use cases, and restrictions.

Public APIs

Public APIs are accessible to all registered developers and designed for applications serving end users, passengers, and general aviation enthusiasts.

Intended Use:

  • Public APIs should only be used to assist actual passengers or people picking up passengers
  • Applications must provide direct value to travelers and airport visitors
  • Data must be presented in real-time or near real-time to end users

Public APIs may NOT be used for:

  • Competitive analysis or market research
  • Claims processing (e.g., EU Regulation 261/2004 passenger compensation claims)
  • Commercial purposes unrelated to actual travel assistance
  • Data aggregation, reselling, or redistribution to third parties
  • Historical data mining or statistical analysis beyond operational needs

Data Storage & Retention:

  • Data obtained from Public APIs may be cached for a maximum of 24 hours
  • After 24 hours, all data must be purged from your systems
  • For updated information, make fresh API requests
  • Long-term storage or historical databases are not permitted
24-Hour Rule

The 24-hour retention limit ensures passengers always receive current and accurate information. This is critical for flight status, gate changes, and time-sensitive travel data.

Private APIs require explicit approval and are intended for trusted partners with established business relationships with Schiphol. Access is granted on a case-by-case basis.

Access Requirements:

  • Formal partnership agreement with Royal Schiphol Group

  • May include usage-based pricing or subscription fees
  • Regular compliance audits may be required
  • Custom rate limits based on business needs

Sector APIs are exclusively available for aviation industry stakeholders, including airlines, ground handlers, airport authorities, and related operational entities. These APIs provide detailed operational data for aviation-specific purposes.

  • Compliance with aviation industry standards and protocols
  • Operational justification for data access

Intended Use:

  • Strict confidentiality and data protection measures required
  • May require adherence to IATA, ICAO, or other aviation industry guidelines
Sector APIs - Restricted Access

Sector APIs contain sensitive operational data. Unauthorized access attempts, misuse, or data breaches will result in immediate termination and may have legal consequences. These APIs are not available to Public tier users under any circumstances.

API-Specific Documentation

Individual APIs may have additional specific terms beyond their access tier requirements. Always consult the documentation for each API you intend to use.

Review Documentation

Check each API's documentation page for specific terms, rate limits, data schemas, and use case examples. In case of conflict between General and API-Specific Terms, the more specific terms prevail.

All intellectual property rights in the APIs and the data provided through them remain the exclusive property of Royal Schiphol Group. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the APIs solely in accordance with these Terms.
